A position is available to carry out research in a collaborative project funded by the European Commission under the 7th Framework Programme. The full project title is Nanotechnology Enhanced Extruded Fibre Reinforced Foam Cement Based Environmentally Friendly Sandwich Material for Building Application, abbreviated as FIBCEM. The project is being delivered by a consortium consisting of 10 partners from 5 EU member states with total project value of EUR3.78m. The main aim of this project is to develop cement-based, nanotechnology enhanced material produced by a low energy extrusion process. The post holder as a research fellow will be joining a team at School of Engineering and Design of Brunel University to deliver a work package on modelling rheology and extrusion process of FIBCEM materials. The main objective of this work package is to create a predictive numerical model for the extrusion of FIBCEM materials to enable optimisation of industry scale extrusion process for FIBCEM building products through a low energy consecutive production. The post holder will be expected to have excellent knowledge and skills in numerical modelling, computation and continuum mechanics theory. Knowledge and skills in modelling fresh cement-based materials is desirable. Besides, experience and previous research on numerical modelling of multi-phases material processing and/or cement-based materials extrusion are highly desirable. In addition, the post holder will be expected to design appropriate apparatuses/extruders for characterizing rheological properties of fresh cement-based materials and conduct rheology tests of fresh cement-based materials, in this case fresh FIBCEM material, with this in-house apparatuses. Knowledge of screw extruder design based on numerical tools is desirable.
The post holder will be mainly working with a project team led by Dr. Xiangming Zhou based at Brunel but also be expected to collaborate with other partners within the FIBCEM project consortium. Travels to other partners across European Union may be required and periodic reports orally and/or in writing will be expected. Good communication skills will be highly desirable.
The post holder should have a first degree (or equivalent) and PhD (or equivalent) in one or more of the relevant engineering and material science fields such as civil, structural, chemical, mechanical or materials process engineering. Candidates with non traditional civil engineering backgrounds are encouraged to apply for this post.
This post is full time for 24 months starting as soon as possible. The starting salary of the post will be between £32,288 to £36,050 per annum inclusive of London Allowance. Informal enquiries should be addressed to Dr. Xiangming Zhou tel: 01895 266 670 or email: Xiangming.Zhou@brunel.ac.uk. Please note that applications sent directly to this email address will not be accepted.
Closing date: 10th May 2012
