NanoResearch---Deposition of Nanostructured Vanadium Oxide Film for Smart Windows
Transitional metal oxides have attracted more attention due to their particular electronic and optical properties. Among them, vanadium dioxide (VO2) has been widely studied because their potential applications in battery, gas sensing, particularly in smart windows for energy reduce. Four most popular phases of thermochromic VO2, i.e. VO2(Monoclinic), VO2(B), VO2(A) and VO2(R) lead to the diversity and complexity in composition, shape and size control. The transformation between VO2(M) and VO2(R) has been considered as a benchmark for the study of Metal-Insulator Transformation in condensed physics. At the temperature ~340K, VO2 exits in the form of VO2(M), which will transform to the VO2(R) as temperature is over 340K. The phase-transformation temperature is so close to the room temperature that it is the ideal materials for smart windows application. However, a few challenges faced by us for the thermochromic VO2 need to solve, such as low visible transmittance of the coated film, the low reflection at the far infrared for heat insulation. This project involves the acquisition of size-controlled VO2 and metal doped VO2 nanoparticles, particle deposited thin film with target optical properties for smart windows.
